Georges Braque (1882 - 1963)

Georges Braque
The original lithograph was printed in 1955.

It was also published in Verve Magazine, issue 31/32.

The bullfighter seeks not cruelty, but to create an emotional connection with the audience through his confrontation with the bull. Braque subtly conveys this tense drama: the rider, leaning forward in his saddle, strikes with his lance, weakening the bull. Expressive brushstrokes and an earthy palette convey the intensity of the moment, while the figures of the bullfighter, horse, and bull, rendered in black and white, stand out against a background of olive green, burgundy, and mustard yellow.

Georges Braque (1882–1963) was a French painter and one of the founders of Cubism, along with Pablo Picasso. In his early period, his style was influenced by the Fauvists, but by 1907 he had begun to experiment with geometric form and perspective, which led to the creation of the Cubist language of painting.

Braque was actively involved in printmaking, creating lithographs and engravings in collaboration with the Parisian workshops of Mourlot and Maeght. His prints are distinguished by their decorativeness, poeticism, and precision of form.
