Joan Miro and Josep Artigas — “Wall of The Moon” (1958)
Original lithograph published in Derrière Le Miroir magazine.

Sheet size: 38 × 83 cm
Print size: 23.4 × 74.5 cm

The work refers to the monumental fresco “Wall of The Moon” created by Miro and Artigas for the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The lithograph conveys the symbolism of the ceramic panel — signs of the moon and stars inscribed in the rhythm of bright geometric shapes. Together with “The Wall of The Sun,” the work became a manifesto of post-war modernism and the universal language of art.

“Miro creates a space where color and sign take on the meaning of ancient symbols addressed to humanity as a whole.” — from a 1950s review of the UNESCO project.

Joan Miro (1893–1983) was a Spanish Suprematist artist who experimented with various techniques, such as painting, graphic art, sculpture, and ceramics. His work is often interpreted as abstract, with elements of surrealism.
Miro's lithographs, particularly those published in Derrière L' Miroir, are highly sought after by collectors.
