In the 1980s, Horst Janssen created a series of portraits of great writers, in which he sought to combine historical appearance with his own artistic vision.

On the reverse side is an image of “Near Simbirsk”.

On the left is the monogram of bookseller Hermann Laatzen dated July 25, 1985.

A rare sheet from a series of Janssen's prints highly prized by collectors.

His Gogol is not just a recognizable image of the classic writer, but a reflection of his inner world: ironic, mysterious, and at times disturbing.

The work combines delicate line work and soft watercolor shading. This gives the portrait depth and emphasizes the character's individuality.
